VoyageLA – Conversations with Liz Law

Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Law.

Hi Liz, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am a personal trainer and group fitness instructor. I’ve been a lifelong fitness enthusiast and athlete. I toyed with becoming a trainer throughout my twenties (I’m almost 40 now) but always gave myself some sort of excuse why it wouldn’t work. When my second child was in part-time preschool, I realized in the little free time I had, I wanted to spend it being outdoors and being active.

I wanted to get paid to workout.

I set out to make this dream a reality.

I got my group fitness certification and was lucky enough to organically gain clients and set up a working gym in my backyard. It didn’t take me long to start feeling like I wanted to also be able to help people 1 on 1. “Getting paid to workout” was the original seed, but I realized I really did love helping other people reach their potential. So I set out to get my personal training certification. Now I do both personal training as well as partner sessions and small group classes. I just love being in the environment of fitness. Bonus that I get to do it outside in the SoCal sunshine and have zero commute.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve struggled a lot with work-life balance. I have two young kids and trying to create a training schedule where I can still maintain some sort of balance has been a challenge.

In order to scale, right now I am struggling with creating an online component to my business. I believe the personal face-to-face relationship I can build with clients is the foundation of why it all works, so I am trying to find a way to expand to the web that I can really believe in and stand behind.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a personal trainer and small group fitness instructor. My clients are generally in my own demographic: women in their 30s-50s, mostly moms who are trying to stay active and healthy in order to live their best life. I train outdoors in my backyard gym, removing any “gym intimidation” factor as well as those gym fees and contracts. My setting is welcoming, and I like to think that people feel comfortable and open when they are with me. Though attitudes are changing, a lot of women historically have worried that lifting will “make them bulky” and have shied away from the weight room. I’m proud to lead my peer group away from these harmful beliefs and help them embrace something that is so good for their health, hormones, body composition, energy, and metabolism. I am honored to guide women toward healthier habits that are going to enhance their lives and thus the lives of their families.

How do you think about happiness? It’s truly the simple things for me. Sunshine. Joking around with my family. Playing with my kids. Dark chocolate. Pride in a job well done. Connecting with people in a meaningful way. When I make a new healthy meal and my family likes it! Making a positive impact.

Happiness starts from within and it’s a choice.
